I am a final year student, working on my project and I am a little confused and could do with pointing in the right direction.

PM me or drop a message here if you don't mind giving me a hand....I basically need some help with the Java Media Framework and it's implementation in a java program.

Basically, I am trying to work out how to implement the Java Media Framework...my project is to produce a VOIP type program (along the same lines as skype) where two users can make a voice call over a network.

So I am going to have to work out how to record sound, compress it. Transmit it across a network, decompress it and then play it.

Fun project...I don't even know where to start!!

i've used JMF API to embed a video (.mov) in an applet on a website, but that is far easier than what you want to do. i've never used the capture or stream aspects of JMF, but i think you will need to. i remember reading about it and feeling lost. good luck.

Lost is an understatement.....a sinking in quicksand is more the feeling, lol.

Cheers anyway mate, U don't have any of your old programs when you embedded the mov file by any chance do you? Looking at the source code might put me in the right direction.

BTW, what IDE did you use on your uni course. I've just started using NetBeans...we were using BlueJ for the last two years and have now just been dropped in at the deep end!

i graduated in 2005 and i've moved house twice since then so tbh i dont know where anything is other than my dissertation (for some reason i keep it safe )

i mostly used jbuilder enterprise edition.
i also tried sun studio creator earlier on, but we quickly moved on to jbuilder.

I did some Java at uni though I don't think I could help with your media framework thing.

We used several IDEs, Doctor Java then J Builder and latterly Eclipse which was by far the best (and supports loads of handy plugins).

I used Eclipse (by far the most flexible runs on linux too) and the 'Asterisk AGI' to plug into our Asterisk VOIP PBX solution and provide touch tone menus including credit card payment processing similar to what the mobile providers use to top up your mobile .
