My cinq refused to start on Monday, and after a close inspection the head gasket has gone again! Only this time it seems worse than before, it went without notice and I've been told I might have cracked the head.

Anyway, I'm taking the oportunity to get a 1242 installed. The engine should arrive tomorrow and I'm getting a mechanic to fit it for me Friday.

The engine took some finding, because just about every punto in my area was either a 1108, or a 1242 MPI. Anyway, I've got a 1242 8V SPI so I'm happy :)

The thing is, what should my mechanic look out for? I've told him about the exhaust and how you need a spacer, what else is there to look out for? Someone should put an "installing a 1242" guide on the net or something :)

I'm keeping my current ECU because it should "learn" the new settings right? The standard Cinq sporting radiator should be ok too right?

Basically any advice on people who have done this is much appreciated.

Thanks to anyone who replies! :)

You need to use the crank sensor and oil pressure switch fitting from the
1108, and you will need to cut off the pointy bit on the top of the cam belt
cover (the bit in question is a holder for a plug on the Punto, we don't
need them) to give clearance on the expansion bottle. Ideally you need a
15mm spacer in the joint between manifold and front pipe, or the front pipe
needs to be cut and extended. If you can find the throttle body ('carb')
from the 1242 engine, get it as it's bigger and will give you more power.

Your 1108 ecu will run the 1242, but you would benefit from a remap -
somewhere like Superchips can put a modified Punto 60 map on your ecu for
more power again.

Your radiator, if in good nick, will be fine.

I'd recommend a new clutch, cambelt and thermostat while it's all in bits too.

Good luck, you'll love it when it's done.:)

Thanks for the info, I'll pass it onto my mechanic. All being well it should be running by Monday:D

My radiator isn't even a year old so that's that sorted :)

I don't know if the engine will come with the punto throttle body (it arrives tomorrow), I hope it does after reading what you put. I can't afford to superchip it yet. I guess I'll see how it runs once it's settled down then go from there.

One more quick question though. Will my 1108 K&N Induction kit fit on the 1242?

Thanks again!

Marc
