500 I'm new.....HELP!

Hello all! I have a 08 plate 1.4 Lounge. Recently the engine light popped up on the dashboard. I read the manual and it explains that it's an emission issue and that I should take it to my local garage.
Can anyone help to explain what the issue is? The car seems to run fine, and if I can avoid the expense of taking it to the garage, that would be great!

Hi. Car had engine replaced a couple of months previously. I bought it with a smoking exhaust and a tappety engine noise. Pretty much everything has been replaced, although the replacement engine was a used one with about 40k on the clock.

Have the codes read using the correct software and go from there Lambda would be my first guess.
