I've just removed this from my car... I'm about to chop the end off but I'm not sure where to make make the cut, so to speak..

Any help gratefully received,
Matt

all it does is cut the fuel off going into the carb when the ignition is off.
back when we had our old Bianca it had slight over run (brought from off a old chap who ran it with the choke out all the time as it was only a short journey car) the fuel cut off valve failed on it one day and all we did was left it dangling on the wire but put a bolt in the hole with some PTFE tape on it.
soon as we disabled it the engine would not stop unless you stalled it.

wish we still had the Bianca..

I'm confused. Why would it be fitted originally if the car will work fine without it?

Back in the 80's fuel quality was poor and ,as Dragon Man found, you would get a problem known as dieselling. When you switched off the ign. the engine would keep running for a few seconds running as a diesel engine does. The motor industries cure for this was the fuel cut off solenoid.

These days the fuel doesn't give this problem so the solenoid is redundant.

I will bring this thread up as my Sisley had the tip removed and the dieselling effect occurs pretty often making me worry as the sound the engine makes during those few 'run over' seconds is terrible.
I'm on Morissons petrol by the way. Will chack my spare carbs. If none of them operates correctly i'll try to disassemble one and try to fix.

Fuel has been pretty good for years now and I've not known of this problem resurfacing. I hope they're not going to bring it back by playing around with the ethanol levels etc.
How long have you had the issue Jacob? Too high a tickover can also cause dieselling but I'm sure yours will be set correctly.

idle is fine, maybe a bit to much fluctuation when hot (100÷ 150 rpm). Sometimes on the end of journey smells bit of petrol.
Have to check carb level vs. petrol/ground level.
