nope, once it's out of the turbo it just wants the gas to sod off as fast as possible. Back pressure leads to reduced gas flow, which reduces gas speed and turbine speed. Can also increase lag in some conditions.

Normally aspirated engines are a different kettle de poissons.
sorry, but you are talking rubbish.you need pressure in any exhaust system to aid the exhaust flow.its like the sucking fluid up a tube.once you balance the pressure,it come out.same with an exhaust.thats why race cars dont have massive wide pipes.fact.:)

most race spec cars dont have turbo's,

The turbo gives the engine all the back pressure (and more) that it needs, hence you want as little as possible after the turbo as you just want rid of the gasses

smokeme raised an interesting point on turbo pipes.whilst a zero back pressure is no problem re power output the pressure difference on the positive boost side of the turbine versus the exhaust side puts heavy loads on the turbine and can cause premature wear

:yeahthat:

Exactly my understanding of it. Plus it fits with the age old questions:

Performance OR reliability?

A turbo will create far more back pressure than any OE system I know about, so what happens after the turbo is moot point

1. Spoiler is a Zender one I think. IMO all spoilers look bad on Coupes.
2. The red does fade - mine started to when I sold it....
3. But, if it is REALLY pink, there was a lass who came onto the Coupe forum a while back from central Scotland somewhere who was after a Coupe and wanted to respray it pink. Met with ahem, mixed receptions. She'd had a pink modded Tigra that had featured in Max Power IIRC and was trying to sell a BM 318 with M3 badging. She doesn't post so much now, maybe she got one?

So.

Pink
Modded
Central Scotland.....

So you failed at Charm school?

can you explain why F1 cars have full open pipe exhausts then?

In a n/asp race car, you need tuned length exhausts to get the best power. It's nothing to do with back pressure, but it's about maintaining flow. In a properly designed system (and I don't mean a Sportex back box on an otherwise standard system) the momentum of the gas actually pulls more air/fuel mix into the cylinders during the valve overlap period.

We seem to be at cross purposes on this bit though - race car systems aren't comparable to road cars.

Back pressure is bad for performance in an exhaust system on any car.
A huge open pipe exhaust on a car mapped, cammed and designed to run a stock exhaust will not work well. It will have no back pressure, but that's a side effect - it's failings are more to do with tuned lengths and lack of scavenging effect.

Hi all, haven't posted in a while :)

Anyway just read this thread, I think people (okay sumplug !) is getting the life expectancy of a turbocharger mixed up with performance. Without any back pressure the turbo is under a lot of stress and will fail a lot more quickly than if a restrictive exhaust is fitted providing back pressure.
However having no back pressure will give the very best performance (y) and it is only beneficial to have a little back pressure to preserve the life of the turbo. There is NO performance gain by having any though.

Take this as an example..

24BHP extra by bypassing the exhaust - NO BACKPRESSURE ;)
