evening fiat heads ,
recently-not that recent really couple years ago- i bought a used fiat engine for my fiat punto 188 1.2 8v sohc year 2001 ,after i damaged its engine by bad maintenance and pushing it too far .
however , the engine i bought-which is 1.2 8v sohc doesn't seems to be the same design as my old one . the guy who sold it to me told me that its from a newer punto -2b he means-
but there are many differants between both :
not the same wiring loom -this one uses less port-which means to me less sensors and less advanced .
the timing belt is so weird ,the belt runs only the camshaft and the water pump ,and the crankshaft runs by the drive belt with the ac compressor , and another small auxiliary belt for the alternator and the ac compressor- the pulley for the compressor is dual -
plus it runs much slower than my older engine .
the engine number is not completely visible to search by it
would any body please tell me what kind of engine is that cuz i'm really thinking its not a punto engine .
sorry for the long speech and thank you my fiat colleague.
peace.:slayer:

The 1.2 8v didnt change.much from the mk2 (1999-2003) to the 1.2 8v mk2b (2003 - 2006)

Most obvious changes are
The manicat goes from 1 precat sensor to mk2b with a pre and ppst cat sensors

The mk2b engine has a different rocker cover/timing belt covers and cam sprocket due to it having a phase sensor (cam sensor) the ecu know what cyl1 is doing all the time

Otherwise nowt major changed

The dual pulley crank is odd... even ac puntos had a singular setup running the ac alternator and tensioner

Non ac just literally was crank then alternator

Some.pictures may help

Im starting to suspect it may be a grande punto 1.2 8v engine.....

the crank pulley is a single one but it runs by a drive bet with the ac compressor .
which made me confused why the crank are not connected to the cam in the timing belt with the water pump .

and how the ecu adjust the shafts if not on the same belt accurately ?

The timing belt is hidden under the covers to protect it from debree etc
The timing belt is a toothed belt - crank+ tensioner + water pump + cam sprocket

The auxilary belt is also driven by the crankshaft - on the 8v its a golden coloured wheel low down
That golden coloured thing is called the phlonic wheel - super important to basically make the engine run....
The crank pulley and phlonic wheel are bolted together, as a result they spin together

The belt which we can see with very little protection is the auxilary belt
If this belt snaps - no biggie as the engine still runs but ac / alternator issues will be come instant

----
Going back to the timing belt
This has to be setup in the correct positons to ensure the valves are opening and closing at the correct time in relation to piston location

If this is as much as a tooth off can cause rough running / poor performace or failing to run at all....

and how the ecu adjust the shafts if not on the same belt accurately ?
The ecu cant control the timing as such
It.looks to see where pistons are (via crank sensor) and what phase (suck squeeze bang blow) cylinder no1 is on, it can inject via the electronically controlled injectors and discharge the coil packs to make a spark occour at the times needed

Adjustment comes from sensors based on emissions (lambda) / noise (knock) for example to alter the injection and igniton

i found this photo after a little search ,
this engine assembly just like mine except it refers to an earlier 16v engine -2002- ,
could it be a 16v engine on a 8v head !!:slayer:

Some 8v puntos DID come with A/c
Rare but possible...

As such it may be the 8v has a different belt setup for the a/c compared to the 16v as mounting brackets etc are in different positons etc

There are some weird and painful ways when fiat did stuff....

But if it works - leave it alone is what i say....
