I’m looking to install a Heads Up Unit to display, as a minimum, the vehicle speed in km/hr on my 2004 motorhome (diesel, manual). Many of them make use of the OBD port but most seem to specific an OBD II port whereas I think it’s an OBD I port on my van. Does it matter or does anyone know of a HUD that works off a OBD I port? Thanks in advance.

I did a Google search that returned that result. How can I be sure, is there a way of differentiating between the I and II?

Here is a link to a Wikipedia article. Have a read and then please post what you think. I have always considered the OBD port on my 2006 x244 2.8jtd to be OBD2.

Thanks for the link. The article suggests that the presence of an OBDII port was only compulsory in Europe after 01Jan07 for diesel vehicle over 2500 kg. Of course, Fiat may have introduced the OBDII earlier on their models. Do you know yours to be an OBDII or is that your assumption?

An assumption, because the socket is of OBD2 style, and it will communicate with a basic OBD2 reader. If you are, as you imply, considering purchasing an HUD unit, then why not seek advice from the supplier in a direct question as to compatability.

Having had vehicles from 96 with various versions of obd and connections to 2x2 connectors to hemispherical obd 1and a half (electronic std) the most important part of Obd2 was the standardised connector and positon. There was also a minimum list of other requirements. Any provision outsde those would not be regarded as part of obd2, ie if a hud worked on one obd2 device it should work on any obd2 device as it does not use any special protocols or codes unlike Fiat.
