Ive got an 1100 here at home. its a late 2002 model and reasonably okay now... after i fixed a couple of things here and there.

however. it needs a gearbox and after that I want to turn it into a little project.

Ive had 2 Uno Turbo's - great little cars but when pushing big power, they are not as reliable as one would want and things end up going wrong.

However, a 200hp N/a Uno could be a total different car altogether.

I was thinking honda b16a or even a well built b20 vtec, Sr16/20ve (if i can find one) 4age 20v or something similar. Im not going to just fit a 1.4 Fuel injected motor and live with it that way. I want something with just a little bit more oomph.

Suspension and brakes will obviously be taken care of too :slayer:

Any idea's or similar projects around? I saw a 20xe fitted fiat here earlier...

I think you will find the guys on here will tell you that is too much horsepower for such a small car. I would check out the max h/p a turbo gives and not go very much higher than that. After all power to weight ratios/ torque steer issues etc. Bigger or more is not always better if it is too much.

Have a hunt on here and you will find a thread on a 1600 na, that has been modified that keeps up or is better than the turbos. Notice my proposed project with a 1600 (Tipo motor)

Yeah I supose you are right. But let me tell you, my close near 300hp Uno turbo was quick. Quick enough to reel in a 911 GT2 in 3rd and 4th gear. Its not really about the power. The problem with a big power Uno Turbo is the turbo lag. once you get going and the power hits, your are wheelspinning all over the place. This is why I thought that a high revvin low torque motor - B16a/ SR16ve will be prefect for a such a project.

The EG civics weigh not too much more than a regular uno and with the right suspension and wheel combo, could be really quick with little power that actually gets down to the ground. 200hp N/a to the front will be very quick in a 700kg car.

I dont want another turbo, they are nice little toys but way too unreliable.

This car must be able to sustain track days and be fun to drive on a daily basis.

Well said - so have a hunt on here.
there was a reply to question of mine that said a lot about what JJhepburn has done to his 1600 uno. X19 cam, and other carb mods etc. Alexgs reckons it keeps up with his turbo.

Yes, In stock form they are reliable, but when you are looking for a bit more oomph, just a turbo change and upped boost wont cut it. This is when other things fail... engine mounting, cracked engine blocks, head gaskets, turbo gaskets, cv's and obviously gearboxes.

Of course, I'm a bad driver  I try so hard but I'm useless, luckily this year I haven't bothered to attend any events so now I can think I'm really good instead :)

It sounds quite a good idea, fitting a larger naturally-aspirated motor, though bear in mind that some of the Japanese motors have much more power on paper than you feel in real life. I'd bet that an Alfa Romeo Twin Spark would be more than a match for an Accord VTEC engine, for example, even though the VTEC has more horsepower on paper. And I had a 3S-GE 2L Celica once that had 166bhp - apparently. It felt similar to a 1600 Tipo to drive. Power is meaningless without knowing how the torque is delivered. I still love my old 12-valve 3L Alfa V6 in that respect (at idle speed, it has similar torque to a 1.3L engine at 4000RPM, and 60bhp at idle as well) and imagine that in an Uno would be pretty good :D

Rules and regs in South Africa seem quite lax from what I could tell, so I'm sure engine transplants have been done to Unos there before. I think your local 'scene' is going to prove more helpful than the forum, but we'll be really keen to see what you come up with (y)

Is it worth then questioning whether you would, heaven forbid, start with a different car in the first place?

I mean, the whole idea of a loving a Fiat (or any make for that matter) is that you use the body, the original engine, or, if you're adventurous, as you clearly are, one from a more powerful model from the same manufacturer.

IMO the only time you can get away with it is if you go down the bike engine route - have you thought about this?

Not a rant, not by any means, so i hope it doesn't read that way! (y)

Yes, ticks your boxes - high revving and low torque.

Plus obviously there's plenty of them about, they're light and it would be unique - well to an uno in the uk it would be..

Tom

EDIT: plus no torgue steer - well you wouldn't put it in the front now would you! :)
