HGT Gearbox problems?!?

My car has now had the following problem twice in 6 months:-

Driving along happily, no problems. Then i take it out of gear(stopping cos of traffic or whatever) Then go to put it back in gear and the twatting thing wont have any of it!! which leaves me stranded for at least an hour - like last night when i was supposed to be going out!!
It will eventually let me put in gear with the engine off, at which poin i start the engine and it does a nasty lurch forward and almost stalls, then everything is sweet again and the gearbox is like normal for another 3 months. Can anyone help me?

Last night it happened after i'd been going at 5miles an hour for 25 minutes in 1st gear in a queue of traffic.

Overheating Clutch?

Hmm.. sounds like there could be air or water in your clutch hydralics that is boiling when things get a bit hot. Does the pedal feel change when it does that?

Can't think of any other reason, a collapsed release bearing would not fix itself.
An overheated clutch would just slip like a bitch (and smell HORRIBLE!).

Try bleeding the clutch slave cylinder. How old is the car? ITs probably never been done. Might be worth getting a new slave cylinder too as they do die after about 40k miles.

Yeah, the pedal (which is normally quite heavy) goes soft, pushes in and out vwery easily compared to normal use.

Might have to take it to a garage to get it checked out

Anyone got any other ideas?

Thanks for the help
Matt

Its water in the fluid alright. Classic symptoms! Go to halfords, get some brake fluid and a bleeding kit. Should take about 20mins.

Re: Re: Re: Re: HGT Gearbox problems?!?

I've had a root round under the bonnet then looked in my handbook and the HGT is a cable operated clutch-crap! thought it was gonna be something simple! So has anybody had this problem? or can anyone help?

Is it possibly the cable not self adjusting properly or something like that?

Thanks,
Matt

DOH! Why do Fiat keep changing things!!!

Must be the adjuster. Its usually ontop of the clutch pedal.
