Ok, so my mate phoned me last night and asked what oil he needed for his Punto, so after a quick Google I said 10w40 semi synthetic and he went on his way (sounded rushed)

An hour later I get a phone call from him again, he was driving from Aberdeen to McDuff and his temp gauge kept going from the bottom to sitting at the middle to overheating. So after a little conversation on the phone I found out the car has been a little rough for a while now and when he phoned the first time the oil light was on so he topped it up with THREE liters of oil without even checking how much was already in there!

From my limited memory of my Punto with HGF it sounds the same symptoms.

ANYWAYYYYYYYYY my question is, since its a 2002 plate and will probably cost more than the car is worth to repair at a garage . . . how hard is this to do at home? any pointers welcome :D

I'm sure Mark, Rallycinq or Stuarty will help you out!

Get him signed up on here in the interim. If he's any good with cars then I'm sure someone will be able to keep him right.

The problem is, he only knows about cars what I do :p lol

Hence he phoned me for advice that is never a good sign :p I will get him to pop on later or email me all the symptoms and pop them up on here!

Ok, just got him to email me everything he noticed that was wrong and this is what I got

"Juddering like fk in gears 1-3
No hot air in the car, temperate needle fluctuating.
Rattling noise beneath the car at lower speeds.

I stopped and chucked in some water to the radiator at Fyvie and it returned the hot air to the car and the temperature needle stuck to the usual heat for about 8-9 miles, then started to fluctuate again."

This is after the oil light came on and he stuck a full 3 litres in as a top up :(

sounds like there is either..

a water leak so when its low on water it overheats... then when the water is gone there is nothing to measure so the needle drops to nothing...

or the more likely HG death..... peice of pi** to do at home. mark the timing. buy the kit and if its a 8 v. the top comes off with 4 screws. then its the 10 headbolts (13mm). get the head skimmed. wack the new gasket on (ALTO up) torque the 10 headbolts back in. torque the 4 10mm rocker bolts back on check timing. and its job done....

he also needs to make sure to run COOLANT not water and check that the rad fan works. also that it is correctly bled.

if the water is dissapearing can only be a leak or hg really..... do as ming says... as i said first :p and see if you can see any leaks/drop in coolant..

Just spoke to him and he has put it into the local garage to get it diagnosed since he doesn't want to take the RX8 to Aberdeen everyday considering the fuel costs just now :(

I would suspect hg due to the amount of fluid loss and rough running (probable drop in compression on one cylinder) as well as the overheat

Still, best to rule out free things like airlocks first :) compression test is needed though for hg

didnt mention air lock as a overboil would be obvious as it would look asthough its on fire lol... i hold stand on if its not a leak then its a hg... check oil for mayo and the water for petrol smell.

Righttttttttt the garage just phoned him with the news, the head gasket has gone AND his sump is rusted and leaking too.

They want £875 to fix the HGF and replace the sump. He doesn't want to pay all that considering how much the car is worth so . . . does anyone on here want to make some easy (if you know what you are doing) money?

Or is this something that me and him could tackle on our own?

HG is not a day job, unless you know an engineering shop that will skim the head on the day. Am sure me and steve be up for it. But yes it is a job you can do yourself.

Headset - £50.
Sump - £40
Skim -£30
Timing belt kit - £30

Ming

How much would you and Steve be looking at for doing the job?

The car is currently in McDuff so work would need to be done there I think? unless it can be moved without damaging it further :(

if needed im sure me and mark can do it easily enough in roughly 2 hours :D after the amount of practice the centos got last time we were up there :) its a dead easy job a bit like lego most parts can only go once way so pretty straight forward

yup we can easily get the HG done between 2 and 2 and a half hours and we're much closer than steve and ming :)

of course though head skimming needs done in an engineering shop though

Do you guys know when you would be available? he is needing it done asap so he can put the RX8 away again lol

Looks like a war for business has broken out lol

Get up your prices and when you can do it and I will give him a shout :D

which engine is in it and would you be able to find out about if there is somewhere local to you for skimming the head
