Saw this too, I honestly don't get the trend for makers of exotica to produce SUVs. Yes, there's a demand but that's why Range Rover, Mercedes and the rest exist. More than that, I just feel that hiking up a great looking car's ride height and adding more metal much like they did with the Cayenne just makes it look bulbous and awkward.

At the end of it, you may have a car that handles, have some off road ability and be surprisingly fast for it's weight and size but take out the middle part and I'm left asking why you wouldn't you go for the far more attractive, faster and better handling Quattroporte?

Beats the fell out the ugly tree Cayenne(though I take my hat off to it's dynamics). I would have it over any of the other "sporty/hot/loony" SUVs but my 4x4 of choice is.........

The Ferrari FF (but of course it has to be!!)

fully agree

luxury sports suv's are horrible IMO, they are all about compromises and in the end do nothing as well as they could.

"but it's great on road"- yes, but not as good as a car would be
"but it can go off road"- a little, and only on the correct tyres, what makes it so good on road makes it poor off road
"but it's comfortable" no more so than a car, the car will be quiter and more relaxing to drive
"but it's fast for it's size" - maybe, but imagine how it would be in a car where it was both a ton lighter and handled better

jack of all trades, master of none springs to mind

Drove an X5 when they came out and as far as Mark's comments go

"but it's comfortable" no more so than a car, the car will be quiter and more relaxing to driveIt was the least spacious car cosidering its mahoosive exterior size I've been in
"but it's fast for it's size" - maybe, but imagine how it would be in a car where it was both a ton lighter and handled betterWot Mark says plus a whole lot more. 4.4l of wasted engine

jack of all trades, master of none springs to mind

Now the £92k 750iL was a different story altogether, dynamically brill and lush inside

That's my 2p worth

Don't get the luxury SUVs...But I do admire the attention to detail and finish of Cayenne.

I drive a Hi-Lux for work, and daily I'm impressed with it's working range, one minute mud plugging at 4mph..then on the way home crunching miles on the motorway at 80mph...

Only thing near to one of these I've driven was a previous gen L200 and I wasn't really a fan. Seriously soft and wallowy and steering feel like you'd expect - though light steering with little feedback's often what you need from something that'll stray off the beaten track. Diesel engine did pull rather nicely too, though still not convinced on that particular form of power plant :p

I've never been into the big 4x4s and such, though saying that I see the appeal of the simpler ones like the Defender and SJ. I also kind of like the old Merc G-Wagon for some inexplicable reason but none of these look like a sports car's been plopped onto an off roader's chassis.

That is one hideous motor!! Having a baby SUV the novelty of ownership has well worn off for me but were getting to the time of year where it will start to make sense again. I've driven the Range Rover Sport and wasn't a fan at all, very barge like compared to the X3. Gill still fancies an X5 as long as it comes with the manual gearbox, for me I want another normal car.

This like the Cayenne might start as an ugly duckling, then evolve into a attractive motor, here's hoping!!
