I have a mulitpla, one of the older body shape ones (I m a girly so not really hot on detail!), its an x reg if thats any good. Today for the first time in my whole history of putting fuel in a car (21yrs) i put petrol in a diesel!, the guage light was on but it was nt quite on empty and and i put 20 quids worth of petrol in. Help!

Not as bad as me - I put 60 litres in....:(

However, most importantly, dont drive it, it'll damage the pump which costs a fortune. Ideally, get the fuel drained off, then refill with the correct fuel.

You might choose to brim the tank with diesel to dilute the petrol, but 20 quids worth of petrol's quite a lot to take that risk with. I'd take the risk with up to 10 litres, but not any more than that.

I hold my hand up to having done the same on two occasions in the past. On both occasions I filled up the rest of the tank with diesel and topped up again every 30-50 miles until performance was back to normal.

On the first occasion with a VW Passat the mix was 50/50 and it would barely run and certainly was extremely difficult to start. I believe I also popped a litre of very light engine oil in the mix. It did 350k miles before I sold it. The other was a Renault Laguna which was sold at 200+K.

The outcome on both occasions was no obvious damage to any part of the engines and they continued to run many miles without any problems at all.

Note that I am not advocating the above just relating my experience!

Get someone to siphon as much out of the tank as possible and then fill it up with diesel, should start and run fine.

If you have driven it till it stops (which I did in my MG) and I assume you have unless you are emailing from the petrol station then you need to empty the tank and fuel filter before filling up with diesel and hoping it runs ok.
