Hi everyone

Me names stef , just been looking on here for abit of help with my little punto hgt called penny lol :)

Ill put the things wrong with it in lol any response to this is helpful.

  1. When starting up my little baby she revs up and then sometimes cuts out unless I put my foot down on the exceleration pedal.
  2. When starting up and driving the car sounds like a diesel lol not a petrol like its suppose to. It also has a ticking sound whilst at stand still and driving . I was told by one garage this is the tappets but they cant change them as there hydrolic all I can do is get some liquid to coat them? Also I have been told by Fiat its the variaters? They have quoted me £475.36 parts, labour and vat included. This includes them doing the variaters tensior and cambelt is this cheap?
  3. Whilst driving along sometimes the ! red sign comes up on the dashboard and also when I break im guessing this is something to do with my breaks?
  4. When pulling away in 1st gear the clutch sorting of makes a clunk noise like the engine is bing pulled back (hard to describe) and sometimes I cant get it in 1st gear. Ive checked through the paperwork for the car and found that there was a gearbox repair only a year ago?
  5. My power steering light kept coming on and off for about a day and my engine management light come on but went off when i started the car the next day and then a few days later, I put a full lock on and the steering just went bang and now wont work. Its harder than driving a non power steering car! Ive been told by Ancaster Fiat Welling that for a new fiat full power steering column it will be £688.57 labour,parts & vat included is this cheap? Maybe me but this seems an awful lot as the cars only worth around a grand?
  6. My wind screen wipers got stuck and my left one started flapping whilst I was driving on the motorway this to me was usual as done it a few times. Then when it was awful rain a few weeks ago my left windscreen wiper stopped working so not worrying i thought its ok my right one is still on so can drive it home. Then but because it was so windy my left one flapped up hit the right one and got caught! I almost crashed the car! Does any one know of any cheap ways I can sort this? My friend mentioned something about a big windscreen wiper for the whole screen a linkage?
Please Please Please if any one could help me with these issues id really appreciate it. If worse comes to worse im gonna have to get rid of my little baby if it works out to much :-(

If yours is stalling could be the cam sensor. Mine had this prob and used to stall when at the traffic lights. Its a pig to replace apparantly - its behind the pulled next to the cam I believe so its best done at the same time as the variator and cambelt.

I couldnt be bothered with the expense as the cambelt and variator had just been done so flogged it on instead.

For steering take it to an independent, might be able to do it cheaper or poss repair. They will need the fiat examiner equipment to set it up though.

For all your issues fixing you might be better of getting rid.

I had a '00 W reg one and think I only got £1100 p/ex - sickener really as they are a cracking little motor.
 
I know its easier to get rid of it but its my baby :-(

With all them problems I dont think i'd get alot for it prob bout 500quid! lol

Its going into Fiat on Friday for a free (yes free) very rare for fiat that its free -health check lol

So will wait until they come back with the verdict it maybe that I have to take the plung and get rid of my baby :-(

What have you got now then? A stilo? What are they like? Any good?

The cutting out and tapping/diesel noise, ud wanna do a Cambelt and Variator to start with, and probably recommend an oil and filter change at the same time.

The steering column unfortunately is a common concern on your year range of Punto and also is now prooving to be a common concern on the Grande Punto too, and they are stupidly expensive... A cheaper fix may be to put a second hand column in which would only be a few hundred, but may proove to be a false economy if that 1 were to fail a week later

As for the wiper's flailing around, again, a common problem on that type of punto is the wiper linkage joint's failing

I replied back to your pm, if ud like after its had the health check and seen the stupidly expensive main dealer prices, give me a shout and im sure ill be able to sort out cheaper or can forward you onto a mate i have in a Kent dealer.
 
Oh, and forgot the other two concerns...

the warning light, that could be anything from pad's wearing low, pad wear indicator wire cut and shorting out (common problem), low brake fluid or something along those lines, if they are health checking it they will probably find that concern for you and atleast inform you of the fix

As for the gearbox concern, if the gearbox had a repair a year ago, is it within 12 months, do you have any kind of warranty for the work carried out, and what work was carried out ?

If your getting a clonking on take up of drive it could be something like the Roll Restrictor mount loose or worn causing the gearbox to rock more than it should or could be something more serious, definately worth checking any warranty on that incase it were related
