Help needed urgent.....first ever post

Hi there all
I having a bit of a problem with my car at the mo, there is no warning lights appearing in the car but there is an awful burning smell (like rubber) coming from the engine...........please can anyone give me an indication to what this could be!!!!!!!!
I loveeeeee my wee punto and never had any problems with it as yet..
