I just acquired my ‘71 500L. It has had very little use in recent years. After an hour or so of driving on day1, it was running pretty well. Filled it with premium gas and it died a mile from the station. I probably loosened up all the crud in the tank bottom and clogged the carb jets. New to this, I’m trying to get the Weber carb off to clean it and perhaps rebuild. Problem-after removing the two base nuts, I still can’t get it off. Was able to loosen cover thinking there was another mounting screw somewhere inside, but couldn’t get that cover completely off either as it’s blocked just above by short pipe to oil fill. I’ve got a Haynes manual on order but was hoping for help sooner.

Can't offer much help except pointing out that there's a stickied online Haynes manual at the top of this forum (if you want a look before your copy shows up). But somebody here might also be able to add some insight to your problem.

Hello, and welcome to the forum! (y)

There are only two nuts on studs which hold the carburretor on.

Someone at some time may have used some jointing compound, as unfortunately these engines are prone to air leaks around the carburretor base.

All I can suggest is that you VERY carefully use a soft drift (a piece of softwood or similar) and a light hammer, and gently tap on the underside of the carburettor casting to see if the joint will crack.

However, be careful not to use too much force, or you may end up cracking the casting.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on.
