Hi All
Recently bought a Fiat Ducato Hymer 544 2.5 TD
On a 1994 plate, as all it needs attention, smokes too much on idle for my liking, leaks oil, uses oil again too much.
So I gotta sort it, apparently they all smoke on idle, but I ain't buying that.
Hoping it's valve stem oilseals, starts first time every time.
Goes ok all be it a tad sluggish.
But it's a Brick.
Crossed from vintage Vw s, aircooled upto T3
Or T25, have a Karmann Gipsy running a 1.9 ANF TDI
It's lovely, drives unbelievably well. But lack of room.
Been restoring all my life from serious hobby to running a business, Engineer for 40 years
And question everything including g mainly my sanity.
So Hello

So Hello
Being an engineer , you know the story about them smoking on idle is BS !
Due you know which engine Series it is? 8144.***, 8140.**** etc.
There are several good guys on Forum familiar with those Sofim engines in Ducato, my own knowledge is with basically the same engine series 8140. Series in Iveco Daily, though similar the engines do not swap over due to lower half of bearing cage above sump being different as one RWD and the other FWD.
The 8140. Series came in Indirect and Direct Injection Forms from roughly 70hp to around 122hp in 2.8DI intercooled form, all before the ECU controlled JTD Common Rail Versions which could be above 130Hp or more.
A couple of easy starting points to check, turbo actuator flap often can be seized or diaphragm faulty , both easy to check.
Another point is they are a big heavy lump of metal (when I put one in a boat it actually weighed more than the cast iron 3.75 litre V6 complete with cast iron heat exchangers etc. I replaced it with!) So it needs to warm up properly, I always made sure the thermostat worked and temp was up to around 88-90 Degrees C in middle of temp gauge before I gave it any full throttle.
Once fully warmed up none of mine smoked on idle, even ones that hadn't been rebuilt but had over 150K miles on the clock, one was at 257k miles.
If I did rebuild ones that had come to me with cambelt damage, (which incidentally bends the con rods , so don't neglect cam belt changes) I never needed to replace pistons so just a light hone of the bores and new rings along with new shell bearings and gaskets. After that the only oil it needed was during oil changes, though I did always use Iveco 15/40 commercial oil as used in their lorries.
Not all agree but I always engine flushed at oil changes, the 1997 Ducato 2.8 122hp version I fitted in the boat I ran for four years Summer and Winter and on oil changes it looked more the colour of cooking oil than old diesel oil.:)
Oil leaks, possibly camshaft oil seal, flywheel oil seal (rear main), cam cover gasket or possibly breather box area.

Hiya Mike yes if I'm honest I'm not sure what engine it is, I suspect that the engine number is up behind the alternator. And it's too rusty to make out.

Yes I bought it of quite a genuine so called switched on guy, he bought it with the original engine overpressurrising the crankcase,
Bought another and put it in to find it was ****ed. Third engine had 90k miles on it. Which is in it.
Turbo looks new, had cam belt done and a load of otherstuff.
Why not rebuild the bloody original.
Yes I'm not a diesel guy, so swift learning. The resource out there is rubbish for such a mass produced vehicle.
Thanks for reply Mike. Where are you based
Cheers Mark
