ok then - firstly its nice to be here, never had a fiat before so im very much a noob and very green, bought a 2.8 ducato based motorhome, so i might be making a load of noob questions at you all. sorry...

had it few days and looking over it, firstly it has a squealing noise when i rev it up from tickover - goes away at higher rev and reappears at tickover. i assumed it was a worn fan belt - but so far i cant find it, i can only find the cambelt - which is on the left of the engine and looks ok, as it is becoming clear that the previous owners did nothing to it for 2 years but may know very well why they sold it - i am a little nervous...

I have found out there are cam belt tensioners, is there also a fan belt tensioner, wherever that is...

can anyone shed some light please ?

Hi What year is your motorhome? What engine. I have a 2002 reged which has the non turbo 2.8 Iveco engine (also came in 2.5 guise) Or is yours the 2.8 d turbo version?

Hi. Motor homes are great fun I had a 2.8 that I used to take to Spain on a regular basis great holidays, and you get to see all the places you don’t see on a plane.

The squealing you can hear is probably the fan belt, not sure but I think they are self tensioning so maybe a new belt.

Now the important stuff the cam belt needs to be done around 70,000 miles or 5 years whichever is first, if it snaps it will be very expensive I mean well over £1000 and possibly a lot more.

The engine oil and filter needs to be changed on a regular basis to protect the turbo, again very expensive if it goes wrong.

Do you have any service history with it?

Generally they are a very reliable motor as long as you look after it.

its a 2.8 jtd 2001 fiat cheyanne 635
the cam belt was changed 2009 10,000 miles ago so should be ok
so, where exactly is the fan belt ??
im planning an oil change and want to put 5-40 fully synthetic in, it seems semi was put in 4000 miles ago so i want that out...
but now i have another thorny problem, the twin leaf springs were shot, so i had 3 new leafs fitted... and now i suspect the shocks are at full stretch...is 3 too excessive i wonder ?
so now im wondering whether to remove a leaf or get longer shocks, it certainly sits up at the back now with about 3.5 inches to the buffer stops.

Hi. If you look to the left side of the engine the fan belt (auxiliary belt) is the only one you can see, the cam belt is behind a plastic cover out of view.

That sqeek you have, when its happening put your foot on tailpipe and see whether it stops , sounds daft but that is our mystery sqeek.

I think anyone with half a brain would have changed the auxilary belt while doing the cam belt, as it (auxilary belt ) has to be removed to get at cam belt and a new one is only about £10,

Eric:)

im sure your right, but i suspect it was fitted by a garage who were told to fit a cam belt and did just that, and as it was changed in 2009 - the mechanic will have reached puberty by now and moved on...
so.. on a scale of 1-10 how easy is to change on my drive - i assume you get at from underneath ..
