Hi there everyone i have just registered with the forum and had a browse through lots of good info and intersesting projects(y)

I dont have a fiat myself but my friend does and is mechanically challanged to say the least so as an ex mechanic MOT tester of 15 years he has asked me some advice.

If anyone can help it would be much apptrieciated:worship:.

I know some forums think its rude to ask for help in a first post so i hope i dont offend:eek:

He has a 500 classic which is in for MOT and some mechanical work and he was wondering how long it takes to fit a new clutch:confused: i seem to remember its a engine out job but have never done one myself if anyone knows how long it should take i would be gratefull.

I will send my friend a link to here so he can register and hopefully post up some piccies of his 500.(y)

Yes, the engine will need to be removed. At least it was on my wagon, but I can't imagine the regular 500's are that much different. Not sure how long it would take...one mechanic should be able to do it inside a week, I would think

AMRT9999 & friend,

In these cars, it is just as easy to remove the engine/gearbox/diff as a unit. That way you can clean everything and replace the worn bits - engine mounts, gear shift linkage etc. - and inspect the box internals by lifting the cover plate.
With both out, it is a much simpler matter to do things like lining up the shaft splines when reassembling.
Be careful though, this is how a project starts .....

If you do decide to remove everything, may I ask a favour :D
I've lost some of the images I took of my car when I stripped it - particularly those of the exit holes for all of the cables - and would like to know which cable goes through which hole between the cabin and the engine compartment. I can probably work it out given the directions they all travel, but a photo or two would help.

Good luck, get your mate to register on the forum and post some photos along the way :)

All the best,
Chris
