Hi all, well my `88 70 SX clocked up 150,000 yesterday afternoon and 22 miles later the head gasket went. White smoke everywhere, temp gauge right up , stopped it immediately. It had a new gasket and a skim at about 120,00, all these horror stories about Fiats and head gaskets have come back to haunt me now.

Can anybody suggest a suitable make/type of gasket to go for or am I safe with the standard motor factor kit ? Also are there any special points to look out for when replacing it ? The last one was replaced by an independent garage, this time I`m going to tackle it here at home.

I`m intending to replace the w/pump and thermostat but will re-use the timing belt and tensioner as these were only replaced about 3000 miles ago.. The cam timing`s right, the mixture is good, the ign is at 10 deg BTDC at idle ,all was running sweetly. There was no warning at all, one minute humming along at about 60, the next ........

Will take the head along to a local machine shop to have it checked for warpage and if neccesary have it skimmed ( again ). Is there a limit to this ??

Anyway, advice much appreciated as we`re in rural Cornwall and without a car we`re stuffed.

Cheers everybody,

Richard
