Nowthen - having spent all last Saturday afternoon getting a TD cylinder head off a Tempra in a Force 9 gale :yuck: - I have worries about the what i'm bolting it on to.

I was cleaning out the head bolt holes today happy as a sandboy, when, at the third row of holes in the block, the towel came out soaking wet, not oily, brown and smelling burnt. Looking around, I also think the water in the coolant way where the pump came off is a little too black for my liking.

Nowthen, does this indicate that my block is fractured or nacked, (the bent head I took off had a fracture line between the valve ports) or did the stuff get in the holes as I wressled to get the head off? I'd appreciate your views...

Hmm I just got a better torch the coolant looks clean. Perhaps some got in the bolt holes when the head came off.....

Nowthen I've cleaned the block surface with towel and degreaser and it feels clean, but do I need to scrape off the slight discoloration on the surface too - if so that will take hours !!!

Re: Has my bottom end gone?

Cheers Dazzo. :) Like you said the Tempra head is just the job. Have you any idea how to lock the bottom crankshaft sprocket ?? I've tried using the brakes, sticking things in the holes, teeth etc but it always moves. Its got to come off as that what caused the belt to break but its torqued up to 188nm on the wiesel diesel according to the book  Poss the only way is to get more height and get the big bar on it, truble is ive only a little jack....

Two ways to lock the crank. First is to take starter off and lock the flywheel. Second is to remove the sump and lock the crank with a big Chisel say so it wont turn. I would take sump off to inspect bearings if engine has got mad hot anyway and a good way of cleaning the sump out as you dont want swarf running round your engine. remember, bearings are marked and go one way only. Also if engine has overheated, good idea to take Water Pump off for inspection, and with sump off, Oil Pump as well to clean out and check for play.
For the block, you can use an 800 wet&dry paper dry to get marks off. Pay particular attention around the water and oil ways.
Last, use a Payen Headgasket. These are better then the Fiat item.

Andy.:)

Cheers for your advice. Its deffo gone now :D as the crankshaft sprocket bolt sheered off just when it seemed to be moving  I can't see any way back from this - other than calling the scrappy  The sprocket had to come off as, upon investigation, it had a mutant lump on it which was what split the belt down the middle...

Your looking cream crackered. Only way forward is to change the engine for secondhand one, replace crank or scrap it !!:(

Andy.

oh crikey. Well acually that would make sense as - that would make it self tightening and could explain why it never got any looser.....!!!! Well Lindsay Porter never said anything about that.....!!! Better stick to the day job ???

no no no,,, you cant go and get a stilo, You cant desert us!!!
so sorry to hear it may be terminal,,go and get another tipo with a digi-dash..and break yours for spares, or keep it for spares...How much mot and tax is left on the teapot?? Honestly dont get a stilo you will regret it BIG time, Have you noticed the depreciation rate of them, the way they are dropping is rediculess,If you waz closer i would give you a hand to swap the engine but you are miles away, Guess you dont want the boot catch then!!

Dazzo I've been looking at colour options for a Stilo on the Fiat website....the "ambient white" option with sideskirts and moonshine sunroof looks quite tasty :D

As you know I wouldav committed to keeping that car going through thick and thin but another Tipo would just wudnt be the same...I was going to get new shocks and the rest of it resprayed too...

That said I'm cheesed off about it...There is someone in Hull with a new bottom end in his garage  but it looks like a big job and the diesel is a nasty big brute....

Dazzo I really fancy a Stilo moonshine roof but your making me think......

Given that the bolt is now sheered - whats to stop the sprocket being levered off? That would give quite a bit of protuding bolt to attack. If I could get a hole through it  I could lever it round. Preferably clockwise this time.

with nothing inducing stress in the blot now it may not be too bad to get out with the pulley off, stilsons are useful maybe you can grind some flats on it where it is; I'm assuming its still in the car and you have removed the arch liner.

Yeah I see what you mean. (y) Right now the sprocket is not showing any sign of coming off but there shouldnt really be anything to stop it? as the front bulge in the bolt shaft (for the outer pulley) is the bit that has sheared off. I'll loosley bolt the bigger front belt wheel back onto the sprocket and get some leverage from behind.
