Have read in some magazines about E85 allowing you to get better power results when set up right .Anybody tried it in a cinq.My kids junior dragster runs on pure methanol and for a 500cc single cylinder it goes like stink. How about the 1/8th mile in 8.2seconds thats near enough a 12.5 second 1/4 mile.Would love to try a cinq on methanol.

E85 has a higher octane rating than 95ron to help detonation but has a lower calorific value so produces less power which in turn means worse economy.
It also produces an acidic residue that rots components.

Yeah it was mentioned in the thread on fccuk. Some of the guys from sweden are running 30% with no ill effects. So 30% ethanol with 70% 97/99 ron.

only benefit i can see from using it is when your are running high compression / boost. instead of adding a seperate water/ethanol injection system you just adjust the fuel mappings, bearing in mind that stoich for e85 is around 7.8:1 i think - its going to bring combustion chamber temps down because more fuel going in will cool the charge.

Ethanol has great anti-knock properties. If you have a car mapped close to the limit....then adding this will help prevent knock i believe.

aye, that's what i just said (just didn't use the word knock). the extra fuel (e85) that's needed cools the inlet charge, much the same way as water injection would.

Oh yeah sorry. Its late... :D

Dunno how morrisons would look on it tho.... £25 of petrol then £5 of ethanol :D

Guessing that you would only benefit from this if the car was mapped to actually take advantage of E85?

I think the guy on fccuk is on about Saab, as there is a few E85 Saabs running well over 350hp on a 2.0l engine with a very small turbo.

Can't see E85 making a difference in the Cinq tbh.

I think the difference would be if your car was mapped aggressively with quite a high amount of ignition advance, an u always had to use a high octane fuel, then using a mixture of ethanol would help it run safer.

We have done the research for an inlet restricted r6 engine for formula student at uni.

With a cam profile change as well as the e85 mix we can get up from 75 bhp to 110bhp in the model :p

I presume thats unrestricted? Id think 75-80BHp is max if its restricted (using a 20mm restrictor as Class 1 rules stipulate) tbh, unless its 'charged and the E85 is used to cool the inlet tract to allow for more boost / higher max cycle temperature.

Our car this year with "standard" R6 tbh not much fettling gave 75 at the wheels through the class 1 restrictor

I must admit its not my research but this was researched for our Class 3 presentation this year which we won BTW :p

And predicted power output was close to 110 but ofc this is a model and we havent had the chance to test it yet although our hydrogen car worked at the event.
