Pat the Panda has been fixed!

Now the headlamps are perfectly aligned with the bumper and the bit of wheel arch extension that was sticking out is sorted.

As a courtesy car I had a 500 1.4 Lounge. The guy told me it was a 1.2... there was me driving it thinking it does feel sluggish compared to the 100hp but then again the 6 speed box and the Sport mode button made me think otherwise and giving it a bit of throttle it was piling on the speed at a reasonable rate, so I had my suspicions I was driving a 1.4. Funny that the rev line is at 6K rather than 6.5K in my car.

Overall it's quite a pleasant car to drive, feels totally different to the 100hp though. Its got a better ie lower driving position which is good, the ride is better too. Body roll is well controlled too so it doesn't wallow about at all. It doesn't though feel as responsive as the 100hp though, throttle response in Sport mode is nowhere near as sharp as my car, so you have to make much bigger throttle inputs to get a similar response.

It also feels definately slower, I can only guess to a fair bit of additional weight (dealer reckoned 100-120kg, I haven't verified this). I think there is some additional lard though as the car is simply not as responsive to change direction quickly like the 100hp. Having said that its more comfortable.

The dash is weird with the speedo going round the outer ring and the rev counter on the inner ring. At first it seems frustratingly difficult to read but I did get used to it after an hours worth of driving or so. The display within the centre for all the usual stuff is quite cool really and does work reasonably well. A bit like the Panda you can still tell its built to a budget with lots of hard plastics seemingly everywhere, but you can live with that as its fairly funky inside.

I do feel it really does try to ape the Mini to an extent. In some respects it does pull it off reasonably well although you can of course tell how they've made it cheaper. Overall a good car. Not focused enough for me (maybe the 1.4 sport is better in this respect), but I will be recommending my mum to try one and a colleague at work really liked it. I do wonder though with such a heavy shell what the 1.2 must be like as I would expect it to feel a bit under-powered.

It's an easy assumption to make about the ride of the lounge compared to a sport but the difference is only trim. Suspension geomtery is the same. Also you may be surprised to learn that the 500 is lighter than the Panda. By 45KG by Fiats own figures. Also the engine in the 500 is actually more powerful but has less torque. Again this is Fiats own figures. The differences in handling are obvious though. The 100HP is a car designed to be bought by people looking for a sporty drive. The 500 on the other hand is designed to be buzzed about town at a more sedate pace. The difference in 0-60 I believe is explained in the engine character. The 500 has a more spread out power range than the 100HP which is fine for normal tootling about but the peaky revs at which the 100HP comes on song are much more focused towards the sporty drive.

the 1.2 is a bit lighter than the 1.4 and has more low down torque so not slugish feeling at all , thank's for the mini review esp the few slight negatives bits about the panda 100 as i'm realy fancying one,

I didn't realise it was lighter. I didn't get that impression from behind the wheel. Agree that the engine seems to deliver in a very different way to the 100hp, on paper there is probably nothing in it, but it feels quite different on the road. Power delivery is certainly less 'cammy' than the 100hp and it doesn't seem to have the alacrity of response which is probably due to how the drive by wire is set up and the more refined nature of the engine. It did actually surprise me how different a car based on the same basic chassis can feel.

I agree the 100hp is a bit more hardcore, probably too hardcore for some.

Well I certainly think that if the 1.2 has greater torque that'll make it feel nippy enough around town so it'll be absolutely fine. Obviously with an engine which is torquey low down it inevitably means its going to run out of steam at the top end. You can't have your cake and eat it I guess!

Test drive a 100hp and see what you think. I do think the 100hp is aimed at the kind of person who doesn't mind compromising on ride quality for handling. Its the kind of car that suits the person who believes that they should drive from A to B and arrive with a smile on their face. I must admit it I do get into the zone with it at times and often look at the speedo and find i'm doing 80 down a twisty country lane or A road.. in fact on the way to teh dealer which is down a wide A road, I was so into it I heel and toe'd down every gearchange on the approach to the dealer and entered the forecourt a bit quick much to the suprise of a guy standing on teh forecourt! Its that kind of car. If you want something refined and civilised then its probably not for you.

I bought my 1.4 for racing, not economy! :D

I'm WELL impressed with the 100HP 500, I test drove the Panda 100HP before test driving the 500, the 500's engine felt a lot tighter, now though after 6k, its very, very nippy. It's a car which I just love driving, I've had a 130HP Punto GT and the 500 feels quicker than that!! All in all I love it (y)

I'll stop waffling now  :)

Ah that'll help it some then. It's probably absolutely fine. I nearly ended up with a 1.2 sport, but the dealer changed it for the 1.4 at the last minute.

I was actually quite impressed with the 500 as in many ways it really is a better car than the panda and I can see that it will have a wider appeal. I'm definately on a mission for my mum to get one now!
