Ian,

As I am sure that you will appreciate this is a Fiat forum. As your query does not relate to your Fiat base vehicle you may get more replies from a dedicated motohome forum.

I am not clear from your description, as to the exact role of the suspect relay. I doubt very much that it will control the function of the mains charger for the habitation battery. Your description suggests that the relay is a master control device for your habitation electrics.

Why blame the relay? Have you tested it? From your description of the fault, it seems just as possible that you may have a bad connection in the supply to the relay coil.

For the assumed role any 40A, 4 pin, automotive relay, would be electrically adequate. If the relay fits into a dedicated socket, please be aware that there are two possible pin configurations. The one where the coil connections (86 +ve, and 85 -ve) are opposite each other being the more common.

Relays should be available from any car accessory shop, or Ebay, Amazon etc.

hi communicator, what you say makes eminent sense. you are obviously better at this than i. am now en route to local spares shop. will let the forum know of the result. thank you. ian

Is this a split charging relay? Where are you in the U.K. I have a local wholesalers for automotive electric components near me in Norfolk it might be worth seeing if you have something like this nearby

Hi All, As promised, I will let you know the results of my endeavours. As suggested, I went, hot foot to Halfords and purchased, what I hoped was, the correct relay. I, carefully, installed the new relay, switched on the lights and they worked. I switched them off again and heard the relay quietly chattering. Turning off the power, I replaced the new relay with the old and, voila, power on lights on. Turn off no chattering and, several tries later everything still working fine. The joys of motorhoming! Thanks again for your advice. I won't ask anyone to try to explain what is going on.I'll just plod on untill the next challenge. All the Best. Ian
