I've been looking at buying a Grande Punto Sporting for my first car. What is the car like insurance wise? (I'm 17)

What is the build quality like...people still seem to believe that Fiats are not built very well...but haven't they improved a lot now?

Thanks!

your in the right section just have a scout round you'll find all your answers!

but...

the GPS is group 6 insurance and the build quality (i think) is much better than older fiats been getting better since the mk2b

i nearly bought a 1.4 sporting when i was 18 and i was quoted £1700 which at the time i didnt think was too bad, but got another car until now (20yo) and just bought myself a sporting 1.9 and insurance is only £950!

Just look around and get some quotes, i think bell and admiral are the best tbh. gps is low insurance group for what you get.

Having recently driven a Tjet sporting I would say do not get one as a first car. It will be a matter of months before you do some serious damage. Buy a Mk2 or a second hand 1.2 or 1.4 or something cheaper.

When I was 17 all I wanted was a super fast car much like I'm sure you do, but trust me, it won't be worth all the extra insurance, petrol, tax etc.

elephant aint 2 bad either.

my bro had a mk3 punto ... he ended up paying £1200 and its only a 1.2, thats when he was 18 mind... tbh if ur not looking t spend at least 1.5k on insurence i wouldnt bother with a sporting.

gl =D

when i past my test (i was 18) i was given a nissan micra. 1 litre and that cost me 950 quid insurence... if ur male u aint gunna get n e insurence cheap mate :(

the starjet 1.4 16v gps is only a group 4, and a brilliant first car!!

you will have to buy this model at second hand though coz its discontinued!!

and so is the 1.9 mjet :( (... prft to the 1.6)

Thanks for the replies.

Yeahh I know that insurance isn't gonna be cheap. Im prepared to pay around £3k on insurance...as I want my own policy (to build my own NCB). Im going to do Pass Plus too...Is £3k a realistic figure for a car of this type - considering my age?

What is the GP Sporting like to drive?

Thanks! (y)

well my mate had a 306, it was the 2litre petrol version (one under the top of the range) - nvr been n e good with pugs. n e ways he paid just under 3k for the insurence on that and he was 18. bare in mind that it was 4 years ago but the insurence group was a little higher than the sporting. tbh i think 3k is a fair price (these days) to say your only 17.

wait till ur 22 :p i only pay 650 quid on an mjet :p

yea there good fun to drive, the mjet is n e ways, nvr driven a tjet. my only critisim with how it drives is i think its a little 2 high and rolls a bit 2 much in the corners. the springs i got on order will sort that out tho =D (or coilovers :))

GOOD LUCK :) if u get one ur getting a very nice car and in my opinion the nicest looking hot hatch out there :) (for the money n e ways :p)

lol yea first time u floor it in 3rd u cant help it but do this :D. i mena its not a fast car compared to like a type r etc but its nippy and the turbo is good fun :) ... and yes i know for those with the remaps im sure u can get em upto type r standards, :)

For insurance when i was 18 i paid £1400 for my 1.9 sporting. Only pay £630 now that i'm 20 :D
If you've got the money go for it, but please be careful we all remember what it was like to be 17 and let loose on the road.

£3k this year, maybe £2k next year. Thats £5k to insure your car, and thats providing you don't wreck it (which will be very easy to do as a new driver) and have to pay excesses and higher premiums.

Don't do it, it's a great car but start with something a lot more sensible.

My insurance on a Mk2 for my first year was £650 as a learner (this changed after 6months of the policy) and I've been earning my own NCB's as most policys allow you too while being on other peoples insurance.

Spending £5k to insure a car for just 2 years is mad, it will come to a point after 4 or 5 years where you will have spent more money insuring the car than you paid for it!

Thanks again for all the replies. (y)

Im not gonna be an absolute idiot with it, because it will be a new car that my parents have worked for. Besides, my mate has just wrote his car off and killed a friend who was travelling in the car with him.

Yer, the T jet will be a lot to insure at first (but its worth it ;)), but it will come down from year to year. £3k isn't really a lot of money considering that it its my own policy - a mate has a 1998 Clio and is paying £2400!

Then your mate with the Clio is an idiot to be paying that.

Don't expect it to come down massive amounts, and the reason to have a T-Jet over the 16v is the added speed and power, so if your not going to drive it like an idiot save yourself thousands.

Lol, who said I wasn't going to drive it like an idiot every now and then ;). Nahh am joking mate (y)

They don't do the normal 1.4 16v anymore in Sporting spec. Its just the T-jet now...I think you can only get the normal 1.4 16v in the Grande Punto GP...which looks nowhere near as good!

Alloys and a different exhaust isn't that it?

If your picking the Tjet just because it looks a tad nicer you could save yourself half that first insurance premium (£1.5k) and buy whatever alloys and exhaust system you want with some money left over to do a few other mods.

Not to meantion they are a lot cheaper to buy and tax (iirc).

3dr 16v GP with the following extras (already includes 16" sporting look-a-like alloys):

Tints
Sub
Air-con
ESP
Sunroof
Cruise Control
Black Paint

Total : £12575

3dr T-jet with no extras £12425 (white paint, no sunroof, no tints, no sub, no sunroof)

£150 difference, but you'll save that back with insurance, plus you get the added extras (or you can save money and remove them and put the money towards getting a new exhaust or something)
