I bought my GP a week ago and strangely enough I had yet to use the windscreen washers but when I did earlier today the amount of smear left after I ran the wipers across was stupid !

This is my first car and still learning about cleaning, general knowledge when it comes to car stuff so excuse me if I've overlooked anything.

I've tried cleaning the wiper blades with some clean warm water and a cloth, there was a fair amount of muck on them, tried the washers again same thing happened, it also does this with rain and obviously when driving along you want to be able to see clearly. A friend said it could be that my wiper blades need changing, but I have a feeling when I bought the car they valeted it but used something on the Windscreen that is causing it to do what its doing, or whatever screenwash they put in isn't a particular good one.

So a few questions:
1.) If it is something they have put on the windscreen, how can I get it off ?
2.) Is there an easy way to empty my screenwash bottle to fill it with something of my choice.
3.) Any general tips for cleaning glass (inside and out)

Thanks in advance.

probably is the wipers....... ive been lucky to get a year out of a drivers side blade.... passenger one lasts much longer

In the end i was getting Champion blades for about £10 each from the local motor factors (Worth finding a local one as they are usually much cheaper than the likes of halfords) not as neat a fitment as the original fiat ones but much cheaper....

easiest way to drain the bottle is to pump the water out by washing the screen or pull out the filter and shove a hose in there and let it all overflow for a few minutes..... you can pull the pump off but the seal can drop into the bottle (guess how i found that out......:bang:)

to give the windscreen outside a good clean the easiest thing to get off the shelf is

Autoglym_Glass_Polish_325ml_090.884.jpg

Autoglym glass polish.... apply to a damp cloth and rub in really well once dry buff off....

for the inside i prefer to use fast glass as it doesnt dust up like the polish

can also use the FG to clean the blades

I love the Autoglym Glass polish! i think i'm a bit addicted to the smell. the fast glass on the other hand is very good but is not much different to any cheap off the shelf blue glass cleaner. i think fast glass is about £5-7.50 where as you can get a cheaper alternative for a £1 in a cheap shop, use the polish with a cloth and the fast glass you spray on and for best results wipe off with paper ;) no streaks

Oh and don't forget to change your wipers

Can't beat Auto Glym stuff but a cheap and very good option for the inside of the windows is Mr. Sheen! One of the fragrance ones. Does a stunning job and leave the car smelling fresh.

Mmmmm, loads on the market, any glass cleaner will do, & without knocking any named specific glass cleaner aimed at the automotive industry, there are far cheaper alternatives. Vinegar & water for instance. Methylated spirits is a very efficient cleaner of really stubborn marks & evaporates quickly.

There are some on here that are an advertisers dream in the car care & all that's related in a can/tin what have you, this stuff aint cheap either. Forget the Scottish connection:D there are times when you can save money, especially in these current climes.

One thing that "IMHO" that's worth while that was mentioned is rain x. Does exactly what it says on the tin/bottle.....:)

You might be a tight Scotsman but bet your nowhere near as tight as a Yorkshireman :D

Im not a massive fan of rain-x it tends to smear and cause strange misting issues on cold mornings......

I have moved on to Gtechniq G1 (which comes in a 2 part kit G1 coating and G2 remover)
