General Given a 1999 Uno MIA...

I was recently given a 1999 Uno MIA by the company I work for.

They have in the last year spent around R22773.46c (about 2000 Pounds) on trying to get it fixed.

Anyway been driving it for 2 days and already fixed 5 punctures on the front left tyre.

Also still has alot of work, very noisy and steering is still not right.

You've fixed 5 tyre punctures, on the same wheel, in the past 2 days?
So either you have a car tyre re-fitting machine, or they've started putting inner tubes in car tyres.

Are there any sharp points in the left wheel arch that it is bumping on? Is there anything obvious stuck in the wheel? Could just be a dodgy valve and the tyre itself is fine.


Noisy? How so? Check the air filter isn't clooged up with jam.

How is the steering not right?

LOL Misunderstanding.

There were 5 punctures in 1 tyre when I got the car.

They used one of these kits to repair it:

From what I have been told I need a new steering rack. (I will be looking into this over the weekend).

The symptoms include:
When driving at any reasonable speed the car feels as if it is pulling/sliding toward the left then to the right.
There is play in the steering wheel.
When the car is standing still (key in engine off) and you turn the steering wheel it makes a very loud squealing noise.
When driving the car also makes grinding noises when you accelerate or hit a bump.
When you turn the wheel while moving slowly the squeaking noises are accompanied by the occasional bumping/clonking noise.

Is there some test to see if it is the steering rack? (they have replaced tie rod rack ends, ball joints e.t.c. and it helped for a few weeks but the problem is back).

The car was basically the factory bicycle and has been around the block several times already.

I also know the left wheel bearing is going (very noisy), right hand cv joint inner and outer need replacement, speedometer is not working at present and there are several other faults that slip my mind right now.:bang:

The five punctures in one tyre - if it's been repaired FIVE times then please, for your own safety get a new tyre fitted. A tyre that's had that many punctures and repairs is dangerous.

Your steering problem could be more than just your steering rack at fault. Faulty wheel bearings and driveshaft CV joints can also cause similar symptoms to those that you describe. You should also check the steering rack rubber mounting bushes as these can wear and cause the rack to move around. At least none of these are big jobs and can be done fairly cheaply and easily.

Have a look at the ball joints. Ive had the same issues with the car (mia) and when I replaced the balljoints (R600 fitted) it was all sorted. I do however need new front shocks as they are bottoming out all over the place.

trading it in soon, so i cant be bothered.

replace all 4 tires with new ones. that should sort your punctures out.
