General Gearbox

Hi there newbie here having removed my gear box on my fiat ducato 2.3 to replace leaking concentric have noticed cracks in bell housing is this a sign of imminent failure

Is it my eye sight or has some one tried to alumium Tig weld it from previous damage?

Yes it looks like it any idea what’s involved changing over the bell housing had a look at secondhand boxes on ebay and most seam to have the same cracks to some extent

Are you sure, it seems strange they would have a similar defect?
Most gearboxes would be designed as one unit, so any bearing shaft drillings would be line bored to match perfectly, meaning a complete box in good order would be the best option, if price is right.
It is not a gearbox I have had much to do with to be honest.
