I've been caught out with the frozen handbreak scenario, so I've taken to leaving the handbreak off when parking and leaving the car in gear.

Parked on an incline today and left teh ****er in 3rd gear. What happened?

the bastard started rolling back!

Doesn't do it in first or second. Any clues anyone??

lol:) is your dogs name Lucky?
just remembered the 'More Than' advertisement on the telly...
was your car properly in gear?

Re: Re: Gearbox

You should always leave it in first, think of when you are slowing down using the gears you drop down a gear not up, the gear ratio is higher the further you go up so of course the car will roll because there is no force/friction there to stop it untill it reaches a higher speed

Of course it won't do it in 1st or 2nd :)

Remember, your gearbox gears down the engine to drive the wheels, how you are driving the wheels which means the gearbox is working the other way and gearing UP.

The higher the gear ratio the easier it is for the engine to move the car BUT the harder it is for the car to turn the engine.

Re: Re: Gearbox

All would (superficially) appear not to be grinding itself into molecular metal then.

Thank heavens for that.

Anyone want to buy it?

Re: Re: Re: Gearbox

i seem to remember being told that you should leave the car in first if your car is facing down an hill and vice versa.

i suppose its if your car moves a bit, it doesnt make the engine turn backwards. would this cause any problems tom? i didnt think it would.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Gearbox

if ya engines a-turnin then ya cars a-movin, forwards of backwards, neither is good
