Gearbox problem

hi newbie needing advice I have a 1.8 16v punto hgt but have no gears at all will go into gear 1 to 5 and reverse but no final drive at wheels .when in 5th or reverse you hear the gearbox turning but nothing at wheels was bought like this as a first car for my son can anyone help ...... thanks

Are you certain that the clutch is transmitting drive to the box ?

If the clutch is working as intended then my suspicion would fall on the final drive.

The HGT is a high insurance group.....

Anyway!
Have a look under neath the car
I suspect a shattered CV joint
A Shattered Diff
A disconnected Drive cup

I'd be tempted to get the front wheels up and see if the they turn when engine running, or to see if 1 shaft is turning when the other isn't

All that, plus the HGT is a high maintenance car. Common Alfa gearbox, though, so if the diff has gone, there will be a fair few out there.
