Gearbox major issue

Hi there,

I've had my '98 Bravo 1.8 HLX for 5 years now with little no problems....

However, I now have a major problem when pulling away in 1st and then also as i accelerate in 2nd. There is a god awful grinding noise which appears to be coming from directly below me (so I assume the gearbox area).

Do any of have any idea what might causing this? Is it a know Bravo problem and any idea what sort of cost to fix.

Sorry for the questions but hopefully someone will be able to help!

Cheers
Chris

The gearbox is on the passenger side of the car.

Does it make any noise when cruising?

Is the noise apparant when the clutch is pressed in ?

Is it only in 1st and 2nd ?

Hi Tom & Anonymous,

Thanks or coming back. The noise is pretty much constant as you lift the clutch and pull away but also when the clutch is up. I took it to Mr Clutch on Saturday and they thought the clutch was fin and thought it was probably the gearbox differential (???) - not at all technical on cars so have no idea what this means or if this is right terminology!

You can hear is is not right in all gears (although the second I heard it first I stayed at the lowest revs possible as it sounds horrendous at 3000rpm and higher.

The sound is almost like a rattling/grinding noise...

Any advice gratefull received

Thanks
Chris

I would say rev related as when I push the clutch it the noise stops.

OK, more specific question, does the frequency of the noise change with road speed or engine speed?

I would say if it occurs in 1st and 2nd but not so loud in 3rd/4th and disapears if clutch is pressed, the 1st motion shaft bearing is worn. To replace this the gearbox will need to be removed. I think you can replace brg without stripping gearbox. Prob good idea to look at clutch whilst gearbox is out.

sorry, mistaken gearbox will have to be stripped, so I suggest taking to some one who knows what they are doing (ie not clutch clinic). prob an 8 hour job.

Sound like you have a bearing gone somewere.Has the car got high milage. If it is the gearbox do not get it repaired get a reconditioned one it will save you a lot of heartache.Cant be the thrust bearing on the clutch that only squeels when the peddle is pressed.Try this start the car up get a long screw driver place the handel against your ear and the metal bit on the gearbox. Better if you could do this whilst the car is on ramps or you could try it from inside the car put the metal bit on top of the gear box and listen if there is no grinding. ok now press the clutch in and listen by putting the screwdriver to gearbox if you hear a gringing now you noise its the thrust bearing. This is not a joke noise travels it like putting your ear to the gearbox.yeah!! rememberif it is the gearbox fit a new clutch as well
