Technical Gearbox compatibility

Hi guys,

I'm the new owner of a 1991 Panda 1000. I want to modernize it a little bit, without loosing too much of its original charm. The gearbox doesn't crunch too badly in 3rd (yet), but changing gears is vague and sloppy. I'd like to fit a gearbox that's a bit more crisp and precise. Do the later 'boxes as fitted on the Punto and Panda 169 fit the original gearbox mountings, and would they take the original driveshafts?

Ok the later box will fit the engine but a bespoke mounting would be required Then new drive shafts ;either as the later boxes have a different layout Punto have different splines fitted to the hub 21 not 20 ( I May be wrong there but are different )lengths of the shafts will need to be modified or adapted then the gear leverage system is different too . It s probably better to strip the old box remove all bearings and replace £100 total all parts can be sourced it’s a task but worth it

The biggest pit fall is the tulip drive is outboard dry on the punto mk1
And internal wet oil bath type onthepanda so drive sets don’t exchange easily. But the tripod drive is the same 30 mm with the same spline 19 at the gear box side

There is 6 bearings to replace. Strip the box get a Haynes manual follow that to the letter then as each bearing is removed note the number it may not be necessary to replace all but if any grind or have noises Do
But before the box is removed change all the gear linkage bushes 1st then go for a little drive !

try refurbing the gear linkages before replacing the gearbox. on a 91 they would still be rod type. it makes a huuuugggeeee improvement to gear changes.
