I have a 1.6ie SX 1994 Tempra (same engine/box as Tipo). I have a bad clutch judder on the car (apparently from the non-Fiat clutch plate fitted a year ago!) but recently when I move off slowly in 1st gear I get a typical gear whine sound for a few seconds then it goes. It is not evident in other gears. Also, when I am on a hill and riding the clutch, there is an odd noise (regular scraping/grinding) which I think is the clutch plate? Can anyone offer advice if this is totally a clutch problem or also a gearbox problem? NOTE: the regular scraping/grinding noise and the whine in 1st both came in together at EXACTLY the same time!

Clutch was replaced by a local garage about 2 yaers ago but started juddering about year after. Parts supplier said there was a known issue with poor quality factor parts.

Well the clucth can be changed without removing the whole Bell housings so it will be cheaper to Just replace the clutch.

If a decnt garage does the work tehy will be able to tell you if the Gearbox needs fixing aswell when they take out the Clutch to investigate.

when was the last time you renewed your Gearbox Oil?

Clutch judder is usually due to the flywheel surface. It needs to be machined.

These gearboxes have trouble with the input shaft bearing. it could be that, easy to replace when doing the clutch/flywheel.
