General Gear knob mk2 uno

Does anyone have a tip for getting this back on the gear change rod?
I've tried knocking with a hammer,(the cap came out), gluing wih araldite...whats the technique please?

If it's like the ball end that goes into a nylon socket/ insert as per the lesser model Unos, I used a pair of molegrips to hold the rods together at the joint end then squeezed them to clamp and push the ball end into the socket.
