Hi All

Looking for help with one of my front hubs on a 1970 500, I removed one no problem to have a look at the shoes and grease the wheel bearing, when trying to remove the other one- but this time the whole spindle shaft is turning so the nut is not releasing - any suggestions how I can get the nut off - also concern how the spindle is mounted - is it just a compression fit or is something broken that is now allowing the spindle to turn?

Any help appreciated

Des,

One of the nuts is the opposite thread to normal, so instead of turning it in the direction you would expect to undo it, you turn it in the direction to tightening it, to undo it. It's been done to prevent the nuts from working loose with the rotational direction of the wheels going forward.

I hope your description of the spindle shaft I.e. Steering knuckle rotating is a not quite correct as I can't see how it can, as you would have to break the king pin in half to do that. Also fingers crossed you haven't threaded the spindle.

ok that makes sense - thanks for that - I will have to investigate the spindle and king pin as there was not that much force used!

Thre is no way that the stub axle shaft can turn as it is part of the casting that locks onto the king pin. Most likely the nut is stripped.

Yes looks like I managed to damage the threads (school-boy error!!- very annoyed with myself), best case it is the nut, worst case it is the spindle - I see I can get reconditioned spindle assembly through various suppliers. - I have not looked at the problem since but am I correct in saying the kingpin holds the spindle in the cast housing - is there anything stopping me removing that and getting a new spindle made-up in a local machine shop?? - and then refitting?

If I had to put money on it I would bet that it is just the nut that has stripped as the axle casting is made from a pretty tough cast steel and the nut will be mild steel. If that is not the case then a replacement stub axle would not be hard to get :)
