i have a 2001 ducato motorhome so on my mot certificate it had, play in O/S wheel bearing, so i took the hub off, removed the grease seal from back of hub and tapped the center of the taper bearing , this makes the endfloat ,set with my DTI to 0.3mm , PERFECT!!!! but with no circlip in the bearing housing or any form of retention for the inner bearing , surely when i put it back on motorhome, bearing inner will just move back and make the bearing sloopy, i cannot work it out, has anyone else come across this problem, robin

I had to have all the bearings replaced on my 1998 Ducato; but only the rear were tapers, the front were parallel.

If the play is in the front bearing, the only answer is replacement, the hub nut bears on the inner race against the driveshaft shoulder and is torqued to a massive figure (see post on this page) so effectively there is no endfloat.

The rear bearings can be adjusted in the normal manner (but I can't remember the endfloat or hub nut torque figure) however if play has developed then these are probably worn out!

I also have a 2001 Ducato motorhome, every MOT for the past 8 years has had an advisory note "Play on offside front wheel bearing - Play on nearside front wheel bearing". The mechanic said there should be a small amount of play and he puts the advisory note to show he is doing his job

now i see how the bearing is held tight together with the splined end of the drive shaft and it all makes sense, i realise the bearing must have worn because the play was not always there! so really the only answer is bearing replacement, thanks for all reply's , regards robin

8 years seems a long time to have play on bearings, i am bit of a perfectionist and would have to do something about it , im off on a year long tour in my motorhome starting sept so all mechanics have to be perfect, all the best . robin

Hi, I run a 1996 ducato and have owned it for 8 years. It has done 72k miles and on every mot I get advisories about play on all 4 wheel bearings. When it fails I'll get them fixed. However, it does seem the norm for there to be play in these bearings. I suppose it just depends how much is acceptable. All the Best, Ian
