Technical Front bumper lower spoiler

When I got the car, I thought one of the previous owners had put that narrow lip there for visuals, but it looked weary and was hanging partly off, the fitting fitting staples were rock solid though, so I took it off, but now, apparently seems that was a factory item.
Does that narrow lower front bumber spoiler have any important functions? Cheers
