on way home from work my mate got pulled from the police, they made him follow them to a nearby carpark, they had a van set up with a couple of coppers, theyre doing a crack down on window tints, the put a magnet laser thing on his window to check the darkness of them. they made him take his off there and then, he was absolutley gutted since he just had them done about 1 week ago costing £200

they said the reading has to be above 75% his was 29%
so my mate made him tell him the reading for normal glass,
it read 80%. this means near enough anything tinted on the side doors only, is illegal. they said the back windows and rear screen can be as dark as you want.
my mate also asked how long they were planning on doing this crack down, the copper reckons until about february,
so just a warning for ya all, as my cars tinted too, luckilly i aint been caught.........yet. so if ya see the coppers wind ya windows down! ;)

happy motoring

Thanks for the heads up...

Just out of interest, where abouts in the country are you?

A mate of mine got done about 3 months ago, but he was given a grace period of 7 days to have them removed...bit strange that they made him take them off there and then.

re

I've had mine on ages now, and have never had any bother, they were the legal limit at the time i had them done,

if they want them off i;m gonna tell them to get someone to do it, lol.

Re: re

As the law stands how i understand it, If your car is fitted with stupidly (ie very dark) tinted windows, you either take them off there and them or arrange for your car to be recovered as it classes as driving a vehicle on road while in a un road worthy condition, The police cost in gmp to have your car recovered to their garage is about£200 then the fees to have it removed, and guess what, to have the tints removed before you drive the car away, or have it recovered again to somewhere to remove the tints.

If your windows are illegaly tinted then you can be asked if you would like to take part in the VDRS (Vehicle Defect Rectification Scheme) In which you have 14 days to get your windows legal and you must provide a certificate at your expence saying to that effect from an approved MOT test station - And they will prob check your car again also as some ppl realise £20 to the tester and certificate is yours!

I was informed the crackdown will be overr the winter months as it spends most of the time dark, even more reducing visibility.

I can understand the safety reasons for this as I my self have stopped cars with tints because of that but they have been extreme cases where I have not been able to see anything inside the vehicle and because they have had a car fault or speeding etc,

And it is true your attitude does effect what you will end up with,
Be a c**t then you'll get treated like one

My pennies worth

How true that is...IMO, most people know (or if not they should) whether thier car is illegal or not, i know my front tints are illegal, but to be honest i am going to keep them until i get stopped and asked to take them off.

I know alot of people have a go at the police, but they are only doing thier job at the end of the day (and i am not just saying that because Sy B is now a copper)...

I have been stopped twice now since i have had my tints fitted, the first time it was dark. The copper sat in my car, closed the door, looked through the windows and said they were fine and let me on my way. He even commented they look much darker from the outside because my car is white.

It might just be me, but i am sure my tints are now lighter than they were when they were fitted, they are still obviously illegal, but they are definatly much lighter. As you can see in the pic above, you can only just see through the windows...these days you can easily see right through...Maybe they get bleached by the sun?

I doubt if it will make a difference, but i also had mine fitted before the law changed.

Thats why i had Semi/Private tints on the rear

and quater/25% on the front side

i got done back in febuary for my tints, but i did have blue mirrored tints lol... and i will be honest it was dangerous in the dark, would drive round with the windows down sometimes, but i was going to have the same as darrens but the bloke wouldnt do them on the front :( i can see where he is coming from just covering his own arse like but i would be willing to have them done with the risk of getting stopped.hes a top bloke tho so its his decision like, but i would love smoked like daz's on mine now. arwell must be because im young :(:(

Technically the company that fitted the tints is also liable under the new laws. As you say he is just covering his ass.

@ RyanHGT - Not sure if i have told you this before, I have spoken to him and he will do them, but you will have to sign a form to state that he will not be liable...i think he said its a form for show cars (off-road use only), but he will do them for you (as a one off), just tell him i sent you ;)

over 70% transmission, no problem.

50-69%% = verbal advice to remove, no action taken.

35-49% = delayed prohibition. you get 10 days to remove them and have them re-tested

less than that, and you must take them off immediately before you can drive. most coppers i understand use their discretionary powers and allow you to drive home, albeit with your windows wound down. then you must have them fixed and retested. also, i think you get a £60 fine for anything darker than 50%

I want to die peacefully in my sleep, just like my gran did, and not screaming like her passengers were!

so what %ige tint can be put on the standard tint to keep the law happyish,
as in to keep above 50%
i was thinkin of around a bout 65% in total if the factory tint is around 30% that means i`d meed a tint of 35% agin or am i miles off
