Fiat Ulysse Sump Plug stripped thread

My Fiat Ulysse has come back from servicing at an independent dealer with the thread in the sump stripped and the sump plug covered in plastic.

The dealer said this was a common problem and that the thread wears over time, and I would have to pay them £50 so they could repair it.

This sounds like nonsense to me. What does everyone else think.

Threads only strip if cross threaded or done up too tightly. The dealer is telling you a load of porkies in my opinion to cover up their own ham-fisted mechanics. Why not pop down to the Ulysse section for further advice and to see if it really is a common problem?
