I would just like to register (and I hope Fiat UK/Italy/UDS) are looking (fat chance) that I think it totally stinks that having purchased a £15,000 plus car with an average SAT NAV system we do not get lifetime map upgrades.

I/we (and have done) bought Garmin (even Tom Tom) retail units for well under £200 (even £100) and get lifetime map upgrades.

I see today having checked for my 500X a map upgrade (less than 12 months after I bought the car) will cost me £50. On your bike Fiat/Tom-Tom it is not going to happen.

Thankfully I did not buy the 500X Cross Plus for the SAT NAV. I used to have a Stilo Abarth and that to had SAT NAV but was never bought for that reason.

I'll use the 500X SAT NAV as a backup, a compass, GPS location device for hopefully many years from now but for mapping, route planning/navigation, various warnings etc. then my Garmin device will have to be the prime device.

Fiat and other car manufacturers really need to get a grip on customer expectations. Who is going to pay £50 (possibly per year) for a map upgrade when you can buy better stand alone devices with lifetime upgrades for far less.

I'm actually so annoyed I'm going to call the Fiat CIAO/Customers services and give them my views. If we all do this then maybe Fiat/TOM-TOM will support us (original car purchasers/owners) for as long as we own our cars.

At least worth a try and we should all do it.

Hi, as far as I am aware, we get free updates for 5 years.
If you contact FIAT and find that this is not the case please let me know here.
I have had my 500X 1.6 diesel since last June with no problems.

In Australia you can't even download map updates yourself if you have the 6.5" GPS (as in the 500X Lounge). Only the dealer can do it.

The less expensive 5" GPS can be updated by downloading a new map to your home computer, transferring it to a USB and then inserting it into the socket in the car. Not very sophisticated but presumably it works. You get one free update within 3 months, then you have to pay for a map update service from TomTom.

In my case (i.e. the 6.5" screen model), I have to take the car to the dealer and they install the map update for a cost of $200-300! .... that's what the dealer has told me. What a load of rubbish .. it's not going to happen. I can't believe Fiat can adopt such a policy that will obviously annoy and alienate customers. As you can no doubt tell I'm really annoyed about this, especially the totally unreasonable price.

I would be very interested to hear from owners in other countries who have cars with the 6.5" GPS and how they are able to update their maps.

I don't even bother using the built in Tom Tom I use Waze on my mobile it's far more informative, updates as you are driving so can divert you if there any problems on your route. Best of all it's free. (y)

I've raised my comments etc. with Fiat UK re only a 90 day free map upgrade.

Yes UK is 90days Tom Tom map guarantee.

Thanks for the info. Can you please clarify whether you have 5" GPS or the 6.5" version. Here you get one free update if you have the 5" version but nothing if you have the 6.5" version. Weird!

I have the 5" GPS.

I'm not expecting much back from Fiat. Usual polite and courteous customer services exchange asking if I had spoken to my dealer to which I replied no as this map update was not their responsibility. This was followed by a suggestion that maybe the dealer could do something for me. Again I said that even if they could they would not want me and other customers going back to them for free map updates as UNLESS Fiat were going to pay the dealer to do the updates then it is something they would have to do on a good will basis costing the dealer time and money for something which should be fixed as source. i.e. Fiat to get/pay TOM TOM to instigate lifetime updates at least for the original new vehicle purchaser for as long as they have the vehicle. Would be

Another feature of contact with Fiat customer services is that 9 times out of 10, even if there is no need, they contact your dealer to discuss the matter. This is why I always give the dealer a call telling them I have spoken to customer services and ensuring the dealer is clear that there is no issue or complaint from me about them.

I have had mine since the beginning of March.
When I got it there was a map update that I did using the app (5 inch version), created an account through Tomtom using my iCloud account and thought I would receive some email at point from Tomtom to let me know it expired.

However, did the process two days ago and the app updated the map again.

So two updates so far in the last two months, both were for the European maps. Not had anything suggesting I have to pay yet.

In theory you have 90 days (3 months) from the first time you used the system. As you are only two months in I suggest you keep a close eye on the 90 days and get your next update (if there is one available) in before the 90 days is up.

I've just been talking to my dealer and asked about map updates.
They believe that map updates for the 6.5 inch screen are included in the Service and are applied as part of any software update package.

Now they may have misunderstood what I was asking (might be only functional/feature set updates to the sat nav rather than mapping updates) but will be interested to see when my car is in for a service.
