Hi! I just bought a fiat punto 55 s 1998 mod ( 1,1 l ), and I'm not actually pleased with the 55 horsepowers that the car came with. Is there anybody at the forum that could please help me with advices on what I should buy to get a little more speed out of the car? It would've been nice if it wasn't as expensive as buying a whole new engine.

Btw, I havn't got a lot of knowledge when it comes to cars, so a good given explenation would've been nice aswell.:):):)

Your probably not pleased with the 55bhp due to the fact that after 11 years its probably lost a few. My 1.1 was so slow it was unreal, best bet is to change it for something a little quicker such as the 1.2 16v, they have a noticable difference.

If you did want to increase power/speed, the normal route is induction kit, exhaust, chip but can you justify spending so much money on such an old car? If yes then go for it, but it would be cheaper in the long run to just buy a faster car as stated above.

Before you do anything like sell it give it a full service.

So all the filters changes etc, maybe new cam belt stuff like that can do the world of difference.

Also use fuel like shells v power etc, it cleans the engine and after 6 months or so you may gain a horsepower or 2 :)
Happy days

Kris

Cam belts once correctly fitted either work or dont work. New cam belt wont change performance for better, infact if not adjusted correctly will cause lower performance , mind on a 8v punto should be hard to do wrong.

Change oil + oil filter + air filter. A dirty air filter will loose you power. Total cost about £30 to £35.

Look at 0-60 times for your car probably about 15 seconds.
It its doing that and sounds sweet its OK. THese cars are exceptionally cheap to buy. Its mainly because the performance is pants. Could be worse, other cars are cheap because they break and dont go at all and costs thousands to repair.

I was one of the lucky ones, I reckon Fiat's variable quality control put a few more than the 55 horses my 1.1 is supposed to have. In fact I find it pleasingly nippy. I don't notice so much with fresh oil and filters, but it certainly perks up with a new air filter or spark plug change. Basic maintenance is key.

I've been driving it now for over 5 years and 80,000 miles and not really found the power to be a problem, hence the fact I told the government where to shove their scrappage scheme.
