If you just wanted an oil change, say.. then any mechanic/service centre should be able to do it.
Yes, it depends what you need doing. Some jobs are completely straightforward and can be done by any mechanic (changing the brake pads/discs for example); some jobs which you'd think would be straightforward actually aren't (like changing a cambelt; consider using a franchised dealer for this one), and some jobs which you'd think wouldn't be straightforward are in fact even worse (anything involving a dualogic transmission; not even franchised dealers can do much apart from replacing expensive modules complete).

We see quite a few threads on here from folks who've had problems when using hiterto unknown general purpose independent garages, so be careful and ask the right questions.

It's worth travelling a reasonable distance to a garage with a known good reputation; check out the reviews in the garages section of this forum.

There's a place in Royston that's generally well regarded if you don't mind a 30-40 mile drive.
