HI Tom im hoping you can help me ive had to replace the engine im my 1.8 1996 bravo, i got a 99 marea engine with 37000 miles (allegedly)
my concern is there are the words "VFD" printed on the rocker cover(these are not on my own), do you know what this means and will it cause probs with my own ecu etc??
cheers in advance,
justin

No idea :)

I'd always thought the 1.8 didn't change when the cars went from Mk1 to 2.

Well i was told it was 1999 but the mechanic thats fitting it says its has a two bolt coil which changed it 1998 so i dont know if there telling porkies???
i just dont want him to put it in and its for a different ecu :( im a bit pissed any how i paid 400 quid for it and all the tensiors have sieze (would have been replaced anyway) and theres limescale like dust in the inlet manifold and also the clutch and flywheel are so rusted there unusable :(
i did find a thread on the search that mentioned something about a different ecu/ variable valve timing?
cheers Tom any other thoughts??
justin

Variable valve timing is on the barchetta only. The Bravo/a/marea never had it as far as I can tell.

is there anyway i can tell if its definatly a marea angine before he goes and fits it?
im puzzled as id definatly says vfd on the rocker?? can you see any probs on it workin??
cheers.....justin

Take the cambelt cover off, if both the top pulleys look the same its not got variable valve timing.

its definatly a 16v engine, what car would this have been used on and would id work with my ecu??
i just need some amunition to fire at the salvage place if it wasnt used on the bravo or marea ive gotem by the balls :)
cheers.....justin

didn't they put a 1.8 in the puntos around that age too?

just incase you don't think its from a bravo

if the ecu is wrong it wont run m8 simple! also the 1.8 from the punto has various extra sensors if you get to the point where u wire it all up and there are sensors that have no wires your gonna have to go find the ecu for that engine if you post the engine no or the chassy no of the car it come from i can tell you what its out of

Cheers guys,
@ Ash, im ringing the mechanic later for the engine no. so if you could have a look that would be sound!!
justin.

Just been down to the mechanics and the place i got the engine from have ground of the engine numbers so im fooked ive asked for a full refund on these grounds and also the engine was all rusted up so i was reluctant to put it in anyhow!
cheers guys il have to wait and see if im gonna be left outa pocket??
justin

If its got no number then walk away and demand your money back.

No number means you'll have no end of issues with the DVLA and selling the car. You have to notify them of changes to the engine number.

hi tom i rang up the local police station and they say that "its perfectly legal as the engine is no longer going to be in the the car its was meant" which is a fair comment but it doesn't help me in registering the new one!!
i spoke to the garage they were very oppologetic (sp) and said it may have been a "picking errror" and they'll send another out ,which im dubious about but then if i dont im stuck finding another engine and try to get my money back which could take weeks of hastle!
il see what nick the other is in then go for the refund!!
