Nige from angel tuning passed me on, my 80 sx, revs jus die off, after struggling to keep roung the 850-900 mark, fiat quoted me in the region of 650 english pounds for replacing the throttle body, but nige seemed to think it could be the throttle unit, as a student i cant really afford this obviously, this has gone on for bout two months now. but for bout a week it hasnt even given a sign of cutting out, in fact the revs rise considerably when struggling to round 2-2500 revs continuously for some reason.unsure where to go next, any ideas anyone?

ps nige also said it could be the throttle potentiometer if thats any help!
thanks

Yup, is most likely something to do with the throttle body, no idea what though!

I've not had a chance to mess with the fly-by-wire throttle on the bravo so don't know what to suggest.

Obviously check all the connectors are clean etc.. but apart from that it might have to be a fiat job.

Sorry.

Re: Re: FAO TOM: idle on a 1.2

It'll almost definitely be the idle actuator. A little electrical box of tricks situated on top the engine. Can't do anything with it apart from disconnecting and reconnecting elect plug. Easy to replace. Just 3 screws and done in minutes. Cost about £70. Common as muck fault on the 1.2

Re: Re: Re: FAO TOM: idle on a 1.2

The idle actuator is integrated into the throttle on the 1.2, its not seperate.

Re: Re: Re: Re: FAO TOM: idle on a 1.2

The idling is certainly a common as muck problem with 1.2s but I agree with Tom that its an integrated unit and thus not possible to swap without serious work

Have you swapped one of these personally on a 1.2 Deckchair? If so more details please!

thanks

thanks guys, does this mean i shouldnt be paying full whack for a replacment (670)ish, or does only part of the throttle unit need replacing,? if so how much should i be expecting the running cost to be. cheers boys

Re: thanks

Hi Guys
It was 3 years ago when I changed it but the idle actuator/stepper motor(albeit just the electronics) on my 1999 1.2 is simply in a plastic box held by three screws on top of the actual idle valve. A rotating lug protruding from the bottom of the idle actuator box engages with the idle valve underneath to drive it. As long as you locate the drive lug into the slot there's really nothing to it.

I believe there's different types of throttle control on the 1.2 models. I have a throttle cable on mine for instance but from what I read it sounds like others have "fly by wire".

Re: Re: thanks

I'm think the 1.2 varient changed to fly by wire around 2001 vintage

Re: Re: Re: thanks

Nice one mate - thanks for the info - mine is a 2000 model and I had another look at it today and I think I see what you mean - what is your email address if I decide to give the work a go

also long shot but do you remember how much the part was - and even more of a long shot the part number/description?

cheers again

Re: Re: Re: Re: thanks

OK, firstly check that you have a throttle cable, if you do then you have the same set up as mine and you are not "fly by wire". Just in cvase it's a bad connection, try disconnecting the electrical connector from the idle stepper motor situated on top the engine and reconnecting just in case you are suffering a poor contact.

If still the same then disconnect electrical connector, undo the 3 screws and remove the stepper motor. Refitting is the just the reverse.

Cost I think was £50 plus VAT so I'm guessing it's about £70 by now. No Part No. I'm afraid.

Note that stepper motor/ idle valve actuator/ idle compensator/ idle potentiometer are all names for the same thing.

I would ask for a 1.2 idle valve actuator and quote Chassis and Engine No.

You could test afterwards for operation but best to reset the ECU afterwards by disconnecting the battery overnight and let it relearn the best settings.

Just a thought too, the older 1.2 Bravos really benefitted from an updated remap of the ECU done quite cheaply but only by your friendly Fiat dealer (or possibly Nige!)
