answer

sorry for hijacking nigels post but i have the answer to routing cables. i found it the hard way.

remove the battery and tray and you will see the bulkhead. now in the passenger footwell remove the various bits of trim around the carpet and pull the carpet up a bit. there is a rubber grommet and cables going through the bulkhead behind the glovebox (which is easy to remove). pull the grommet out and make a hole in it for your cable and a hole in the soundproofing on the other side of the hole (take care not to cut wires). you now have the cable through the bulkhead. route it along to where you want it and try to get the carpet etc back the way you found it!

regarding the head unit - the easiest way is to go to a fiat dealer and get them to pull it out but if you dont want to do that then you can do what i did but that will leave the head unit in about 30,000 pieces (use hammer and big scrwedriver). if you want i have a spare headunit so if you bugger it up you can get one back again!

Hijack

No probs please do!

Easiest way to get the head unit out is using feeler guages. Open tape cover, slip feeler gauge down L/H side and pull. Out in seconds. Mind you...you have to find your feeler guages first though!
