Exhaust??

Forgive me if im being silly but recently ive noticed a Fibreglass type packing appearing from my Fiat Punto Tailpipe,i have pulled three or four long strips out.
Can anyone tell me what it is, and do i need to replace exhaust?
Its NOT any noisier tan it was before.
