Error Codes on my MK2B Punto Active Sport

Hi Guys n Gals, i'm hoping for a little bit of info if poss, My 2004 3dr Punto 1.2 Active Sport has developed 2 faults, hooked it up to a ODBII reader and it came up with a P0500 fault and an U1602 fault. The first one was an easy one to find but the U1602 wasnt, can someone in the know explain to me what the fault is, which part it is and how to repair it and find it!

What the car does :- Intermittent dashboard light showing the steering wheel, in turn it makes the steering extremely heavy (even with the girlie button on & off!). If i turn the car off then start the engine again the light goes out and car is normal ??? It's starting to annoy the hell out of me!

Totally at a loss on this one!

The U code is a communication fault which will relate to the P0500 code which is for speed sensor, in this case the one on your gearbox above the diff. Check the connection to this is clean & secure but also check the earth wire by the engine ECU on the throttle body - I have had some really CRAZY things happen when this earth is less than perfect!
