I have a new automatic 2012 Fiat 500, purchased less than a month ago and with approx 500 miles on it so far. I've been noticed problems with starting the engine. This doesn't happen all the time, but sometimes the engine will fail to turn over when I'm starting the car up. Also, I was driving the other day and had the engine stall on me when I had to make an abrupt stop. I had to shift from drive back into park and restart the car. I took the car back to the dealership and they didn't seem optimistic about finding the problem (since no warning lights are on). Was hoping someone might have an idea of what is going on and/or had a similar problem fixed:confused:

If the engine does not turn over at all when you have the problem, I would suspect an electrical problem. Since the car died after a sudden stop that could possibly indicate a loose connection somewhere. Obviously if the problem is intermittent it will be hard to discover. I had a 90 Subaru that had a problem with intermittent rough running that one dealer could not fix after many tries. When I got back from vacation my home dealer finally found the problem.it was a worn wiring harness causing a short. It was in a very hard spot to fix and cost $750. I would ask the dealer to make a check of the wiring connections, especially around the starter.

Good luck.

Gumby - I have had my Fiat 500 Pop AT for less than a month (but already 900 miles) and experienced similar problems with the starter (3 times) and stalling (once at an intersection facing up an incline). I'm tempted to take it to a Fiat studio but worry that they won't be able to recreate either problem. Keep us posted on your findings and I'll do the same!

I took my Fiat 500 Pop to the Fiat service dept. today to check out the starter and stalling concerns. Results (their words directly from the invoice):
Diagnosis - inspect and found no dtcs present, check for tsbgs found one case # s1118000005 necessary to torque the engine ground...
Perform case # s111000005 torque the engine ground and road test to verify repair

I picked it up later in the day and it works fine for now. If anything comes up, I'll post it!

I have a feeling that it might have been a loose ground connection and tightening the connection fixed the problem. Congrats! now you can just enjoy driving it!:D

With a Volkswagen Fox I had this issue and dealer found a defective seatbelt sensor. Dash warning light did not occur, was fine, made the usual alerts.

If the above cure didn't work, it could have been a defective Neutral Safety Switch. That's the device that keeps the engine from starting when the transmission is in any forward or reverse gear.
