Hi,

I was checking my engine oil this morning and it was between min and max mark - this was cold and the car left over night.

I turned the car on and just had it on for like 30 seconds. When I checked the engine oil again the oil had covered half the dipstick well above the max mark.

Now my question is - should i top my oil closer to the max mark and use the reading from cold engine.

Or should i not touch my oil as it may have been overfilled and is wel above the max mark?

:bang:

Yes that's normal after turning the engine over, as the oil pump has forced oil all through the engine.

So always level check when cold, and top up as required

so the smothered dipstick when engine is warm/on is that normal

i dont want to overfill

The oil in a sump of an engine gets sloshed about when the engine is running so it's perfectly normal that the dipstick gets splatted with oil. The absolute perfect way to accurately check the oil level in any engine is first thing in the morning (or a long time after the car hasn't ran) so all the oil that has been pumping around the engine can drain down into the sump. That way you know the sump is full with pretty much all the oil - or at least 90% of it - to give you a good measure of how much is in there. You can of course check it when hot but it's far more accurate to wait an hour or two until it cools down (y)
