Hi all,

I have a 1997 Fiat punto 75sx. From yesterday onwards, the car was acting weird. The battery light was on all the time. Right after that when I switched on the in-car blower/heater, it wasn't working properly, seemed as if the fan was dragging itself, lack of power. Even when I put the blower in 3rd mode, it felt like it was blowing in 1st or 2nd modes.
Then today morning I tried to wash the windscreen with wipers it was also showing lack of power, seemed it was also dragging. But all was okay and I started the car and went to club, switched off the car, came back after 10 minutes cranked the car again and all appeared normal. As my fuel was low I decide to fill her up, so went to the petrol station, switched off the car. After I switched off the car, I just put the key in ignition mode, and when I tried to switch on the light, some kind whining sound popped up. I filled the car and tried to start it, ignition was on but just small starting sound and nothing else. The car won't start. A passing kind motorist helped me by trying to jump start the car and it didn't work.

One more thing - my exide battery has an option where I could see if the battery is working/ fully charged - it will show green colour if fully charged and black if not. My battery is showing black. But still if I switch on the ignition every light comes on, power windows working well.

Sorry for the long story. I don't know how to explain the situation. Kindly help me. Thanking you all in advance for your time and replies.

It sounds to me like the battery has had it, but it could be the alternator is not charging properly which is what's caused the battery to fail. Connect a known working battery, if the car starts record the voltages and get back to us.

Yep, measure battery voltage see what you have. If you have 12-13v across the battery try taking the wires off the battery and cleaning both the wires and battery posts and try again. If that still doesn't work try putting jump cable from battery -ve to somewhere on the engine or gearbox and try starting it then. If/when you get it started read the voltage across the battery again with it running.

Let us know how you get on.
