General Engine management light

Hello folk's
can any one shed light on why all of a sudden the engine management light comes on. This happens every now and again, I could travel on a long run and the light will be off, but travel on a short distance it may come on!
It started when I had the car serviced at a non fiat garage, I took it back to him, but nothing was found.
Will I have to take it to the fiat dealership, or will any auto electrician have a fault diaognostic machine that can read the fiat engine (by the way it is a 2001 1.9 desiel)
P.S. also the battery died and I have lost the code for the radio, where can I get this from besides the dealership.

Most independent garages should have a diagnostic machine and will probably a lot cheaper than fiat.

In terms of the radio i know ford used to do it, but they use to put the code on top of the radio, so when pulled out it was there. Maybe pull out and have a search
